What are Canons Rebels Club trials?

Trials are for Under 10 and U11 to Opens players only.
The purpose of the trials is to allocate each player into an appropriate team according to their skill level. This ensures all players continue to grow and develop their skills throughout the season. Non competitive divisions (7-9 years do not need to trial) for Canons.

What can I expect at trials?

Players are expected to attend every trial session and should arrive at trials at least 15mins prior to the start time. Players/parents should check the Facebook page or website to see times for each age group and check for adverse weather announcements.

Marshalls will call players together and mark names off a roll prior to the start of the session. Each player will be marked with a number on their arm and leg in order to be identified on court. Not all players will be on the court at one time. If players are not on court it is important they sit close by to be ready to take the court when they are called.

Players may sometimes be asked to play in positions for which they have not nominated to fill shortfalls on court. You will not be graded on your performance in these positions, but your willingness to help with shortages will be appreciated!

Players may not all get equal court time, due to the need to have 2 full teams on court at all times, but we will ensure that you have been looked at in both of your nominated positions.

How should I prepare for trials?

You should prepare like you would any game or training session by ensuring you have had something to eat prior and have a water bottle for the session. It is important to remember that netball is about having fun, making new friends and trying your best.

What do I wear?

Please wear comfortable clothing and sports shoes. Please DO NOT wear Rep or club gear - it does not advantage you at all.

All jewellery and especially earrings need to be removed before trials as they cannot be taped. Earrings can not be taped for trials or games at any time during the season. There are no exceptions to this rule.

You will not be permitted to trial unless they are removed. If you have recently had your ears pierced you will still be expected to remove them, so please ensure you have a safe place to keep them, preferably at home.

What do I bring?
  • Strapping tape, asthma puffers, other medical requirements if needed
  • A water bottle
  • A big smile

What tips can you give to parents?

Please ensure you arrive with your child to the courts at least 15 mins before the start time for check-in.
Parking is sometimes an issue so please allow for this.

Please be encouraging and remind your child that they should be having fun whilst doing their best. Although trials can be nerve-wracking for some, it is important to remember that all players will be placed in a team and no one misses out.

Parents and players are not permitted to approach the selectors during trials. If you have any questions or concerns there will be Canons committee members at the control desk or wandering the area which you can approach. If you cannot find a committee member or think of a question after the night, please email canonspresident@gmail.com

What if we can't make one of the trials?

We expect players to attend every trial session. If you know in advance that you cannot make a trial night, please let the selectors know the week before so they do not plan to put you on the court.

If it is unexpected absence that you are not aware of the week prior, or if it is the first trial you are unable to attend, please email president@canonsrebels.com.au as early as possible before the trial night. Medical certificates will be requested to explain absences for illness or injury.

What happens if any of the trials are rained out?

We will post a message on our Facebook/Instagram and the Canons website pages if trials will not be on. Please don't email committee members or send Facebook messages as we are unable to reply to these.

My child is about to start Non-Competitive (7-9 years), do we have to come to trials?

No, trials are for Under 10 to Opens divisions. Under 7-9's non-competitive teams first session together will the first night of team training.

What are the DPNA Grading Carnivals for?

DPNA holds these grading carnivals to assist in placing club teams into the appropriate divisions for some of the larger cohorts.  As an example in prior years DPNA have had 11 divisions of Cadets and this carnival assists greatly in reducing the amount of regrades after rounds 6 or 8, depending on the number of teams in the division.

Who attends the DPNA Grading Carnivals?

DPNA hold a grading carnivals for:
  • Under 10 & Under 11  - Date listed in our club calendar Club Calendar

This is an additional opportunity for our clubs to ensure teams are balanced for the season and rejig any movements prior to final submission of teams to DPNA.
