Umpiring for Canons

At Canons, we want to make sure our umpires are supported to develop, receive mentorship, and continue to achieve badging.

Our umpires are an integral part of our game, and we wouldn't be able to step on court without them!

Umpiring in 2026

Welcome to Canons Umpiring!  If you are new to the club, or keen to join team white, you can check out further information about umpire development and training, exams, umpire dress-codes, what to do on game day

Our amazing Coordinators Rori and Summer, will guide our umpires each Saturday during the winter fixtures, and umpiring games from Opens Division 1 all the way down to our non-competitive age groups. Rori & Summer have access to a number of Umpire Mentors through DPNA, who are always available to develop our "team white". Both are available on and around the courts throughout fixtures on game day.

For every team that the Club enters in the DPNA Winter competition, we are required to provide at least one umpire. To meet this obligation, we are seeking any interested players and parents who will be prepared to attend an umpiring training course, sit for and pass the umpires theory exam, and umpire on a regular basis (at least once a fortnight).

If you are not registered as a player, Canons will register you with Downey Park as an umpire, as this will cover you for insurance. Because of the cost involved in the training program, your registration and time required to support and train umpires to reach the standard required, we ask you to make the commitment to umpire games on a regular basis throughout the season.

Non Competitive teams now have coach facilitators who coach and umpire concurrently to help our little ones learn the rules and develop skills during game play.

Umpiring Courses

If you have never had any mentoring during your umpiring career, this can be a great way to learn more about the game with the whistle in hand. This year, Downey Park will continue to offer some great information sessions for umpires that involve a combination of theoretical and practical workshops, along with other DPNA club umpires.

Intermediate Umpires:

  • Register for an account with Netball Australia (or log-in if you already have an account) and search for 'Rules of Netball' exam
  • Allow two hours to complete the online exam
  • A pass in the exam is a grade of 70% or higher
  • The exam must be completed every four years

  • Login to Netball Australia to regularly enrol in learning that will best support you as an umpire
  • an example of the learning offered is the Elite Umpire Course (this is a pre-requisite for an A Badge)
  • Netball Queensland also offers B Badge and A Badge umpire camps for umpires looking to work towards those badges and further develop their skills
  • Any information you require concerning badging, pre-requisites, and assessment is clearly outlined in the National Umpire Development Framework
